Motivation Monday #24: Get up, Dress up and Show up

Even on those days that staying in bed seems like the only option, get up and show up.

Motivation Monday #23

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.

There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of
God that is within us.

It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

Motivation Monday #21: Who is your adviser?

Happy New Year.

As you make plans and goals for the new year, be careful who or what you consult for advice. Are you sharing your goals with negative and cynical people who will only discourage and water down your plans. Seek advice and direction from people with experience and the right attitude for success. Consult credible sources both online and offline.

Have a Prosperous and DARING 2017.

Motivation Monday #15: A toast to the gang

This is the 15th update for Motivation Monday. Thanks all for reading, commenting and liking. It is my hope that these quotes inspire and motivate you as you start the week.

Today I choose to celebrate and acknowledge friends, the real, authentic and true people in life . In the busy world we live in today, it can sometimes be difficult to keep in touch and spend time together.  Despite your age, gender, social statues, we all need friends. Genuine and real people to share this journey of life with.

It is better to have that one authentic friend than be surrounded by crowds who run off with things get crazy in your life. Purpose to be that dependable and real friend. This week, I urge you to make time to spend with a friend or even call or text them. Remind them that you care and think about them .

A toast to all my friends, old and young for filling my life with do much joy and laughter. I celebrate you.

Have a friend-filled week.

If ever there is tomorrow when we’re not together…there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think but the most important thing is, even if we’re apart… I’ll always be with you. Winnie the Pooh

Candle in the Dark

This is a candle i have had with me for close to ten years. It keeps disappearing and appearing in my house for all that time.

I took this photo on one of the nights when i was really down. So much was happening around me and i felt so overwhelmed. Tired of life and all that was happening.

Just sitting and watching the yellow flame gently glow in the darkness brought some peace and space to sort my thoughts. Isn’t it refreshing just to have that one person who sits with you through the hard and confusing times? They do not offer advice or keep badgering you to talk, they just walk with you in silence as you try to sort out your maze of confusion.

That candle glowing brightly and silently on a dark Saturday night challenged me to be that friend who offers light and peace to my loved ones, walking with them when life is crazy. Just being the candle in the dark.

Motivation Monday 13: Live a life that matters

This last weekend our family held a memorial to celebrate the life of our maternal grandfather who died 51 years ago. He was a teacher and also a church minister. I never got the honour of meeting him but my siblings and I have heard so much about him.

Jason Kilee was a man who believed in education and mentorship and supported a good number of young men and women through their education and careers. These people are now in their 70s and 80s but still remember the words he told them or what he did for them. My grandfather was not materially rich but he had a big heart and selflessly reached out to anyone who needed his help.

He may be gone for the last 5 decades but his legacy remains. Most of the people whose lives he touched went on to become great influences in society.

What kind of life are you creating? Will it just end when you die or will your influence continue through others? Are you just existing and going through the motions of life? Strive to live a life that influences another person positively. Build a life that will live beyond you.

Motivation Monday 12: You can’t pour from an empty cup

Self care is an act of self-love.

Most of us, especially women, have been raised to believe that it is prudent to put other first and ourselves last. That we need to care for the needs of others while putting our own personal need in the non-priorities list.

Truth is, you need to make self-care and self-love a priority. How can you give something that you do not have? How you treat yourself is how you are inviting the rest of the world to treat you.

It is not selfish to refill your own cup, so that you pour into others. This is not a luxury, it is important.

Take care of yourself physically; mentally; emotionally and spiritually. Taking good care of you means that the people in your life will get the best version of you and not what is left of you.

Remember when you were a kid? How everything looked possible. With an imagination so big and vivid. How you were certain that you could change the world?

Then you grew up and the vivid imagination was replaced by fear and doubt. Fear of failure, Fear of what they will say, Fear of looking stupid.

Many good opportunities have passed me. Not because i was incompetent or lacked potential, it was because of i was afraid and terrified. Fear of failure , Fear of the unknown have paralyzed me more times than i can imagine. Fear of being rejected if I reach out to another human being.

This blog Dare To Be is my action to dealing with fear of the unknown and fear of what others may think. It is an opportunity for me to speak what is in my mind.,

Motivation Monday #10: Feel the fear

Every human being has been afraid before and still feels fear every now and them. I have felt fear, been totally disabled by it, unable to move an inch, unable to make any sane decision.

Fear is a normal human reaction. To be courageous does not mean that you are not afraid, you have made up your mind to take action despite the trembling feeling.

Feel the fear but do what you need to do.

Be so good, they can’t ignore you

Brand you.compressed

Most of us associate the term “brand” with an organization or a product. But what about people? Can an individual be a brand?

Anyone can develop their own personal brand whether they are celebrities or not.A strong personal brand will enhance your life and reputation no matter what field you are in.

So how can one develop a personal brand?

1. Define your brand. What do you want to be known for? What do you want to be associated with?

2. Know your strengths and weaknesses. This calls for an honest look at your life and picking out what you are good at. Capitalize on those strengths. Know your weak areas and work on improving them.

3. Reputation matters. Build your reputation . Be a reliable person, one who keeps their word. Guard your reputation jealously. Establish credibility.

Tom Peters quote compressed

4. Image can make or break you. How do you dress? Does your image communicate sloppy and careless or confident and reliable? One does not have to break the bank to dress well but neat and presentable dressing fit for the occasion is enough. Clean up your online image. Social media gives us freedom to express opinions but can be what breaks your personal brand.

5. Network. Take time to deliberately meet and connect with other people. Attend events that will give you an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with others. Listen and learn. Offer to assist others reach their goals . Maintain and keep growing your networks.

Stand Out

6. Know your stuff. Are you in accounting or business but have no idea of the latest technologies being used in your field. Take time to learn no study the current trends in your field. With technology available now, one has no excuse not to keep learning and improving their skills. Learning is a life long process.

7. Be visible. Write, make presentations. Strive to become the “Go to” person in your field. When people think about your field, are you one of the people that comes to mind? Learn the art of self promotion which should not be confused with bragging. Self promotion is an opportunity to showcase your skill and your willingness to use that skill to bring value to an organization or to an individual.

Personal branding is about managing your name—even if you don’t own a business—in a world of misinformation, disinformation, and semi-permanent Google records. Going on a date? Chances are that your “blind” date has Googled your name. Going to a job interview? Ditto.
– Tim Ferriss

8. Strive for Excellence. Whatever you do, do it well and with passion.  Mediocrity is easier but does nothing to promote your personal brand. Find ways to produce value.

9. Have a mentor. Everyone needs someone to look up to. Someone to guide your other with one-on-one sessions or by learning from studying their lives.

10. Be yourself. Build your brand around your authentic self. People connect with other people and if you appear fake it will be hard to be trusted.

Building a personal brand takes time. As you begin to fine tune your brand, opportunities begin to come your way. Remember to enjoy, savour and learn from the process.

Peace and serenity in nature-Here and Now

Here and Now

Away from the buzz and speed of the city, the magnificence of the still and peaceful water that reflects the majestic trees and the happy white clouds against the blue skies.

Oh the calmness and serenity of the spring as the trees and clouds reflect majestically  on the water.

For a while all the troubles and noises in my head seems to disappear.

Captivating Cape Town

A few weeks ago, i had the opportunity to visit Cape Town,  South Africa for a conference. This was an interesting experience as i had always hoped to visit South Africa.  The Nairobi to Johannesburg flight was uneventful and the service given by the South Africa Airways crew was spectacular. After a two-hour delay at the Oliver Tambo International airport in Johannesburg we left for Capetown which is a one-hour flight away.

View of KilimanjaroView of Mt Kilimanjaro from the skies

I arrived in Cape town on a cold Sunday evening, excited and ready to savour this beautiful country. The week long conference was held at the NH Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West around 25 minutes drive from the airport.

Capetown weather in May is quite unpredictable, it was interesting how one day would be freezing cold and drizzling and the next day would be all warm and blue skies. Capetown is beautiful.

Capetown is the ultimate masterpiece of mother nature. Whether you are hiking the table mountain, riding the cable car or enjoying a glass of fine wine in the lush and inviting vineyards, this town will inspire and relax you. It is a mix of the coastal beaches, scenic landscapes and the rugged mountains that seem to surround all the beauty of this city. The  beauty about this city is that it is a perfect destination for leisure or business. It provides the perfect opportunity to mix business and pleasure.

Table Mountain

This is a must visit if you are in Cape Town. The view of the mountain is breath taking and inviting to say the least. If you are a lover of adventure and physical exercise then a hike up the mountain would be ideal.  If this strain is not your cup of tea, then you can take a  five-minute ride up then down the mountain via cable car. Do not forget to take photos while at it. The view from the top of the Table Mountain is an experience i had never had before in my life. Serene, Calm and breathtaking. you have not really visted Capetown if you have not stood at the top of this mountain. Sit at the top and soak up the fresh air and 360 degree view of Cape town. you can grab a snack at the Table Mountain Cafe at the top.  More Table Mountain activities

Robben Island

A trip to Cape Town would not be complete without a visit to the Robben Island. The name is Dutch for “Seal Island” Robben Island has been described as a Symbol of Triumph of the human spirit over adversity. Robben Island is both a South African National Heritage Site as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This island carries with it stories and history of the South African nation. This is where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. This visit gave me a perspective of the South African history i did not know about. It was interesting to learn that the struggle for independence for the nation was a sacrifice made by different people not just Nelson Mandela. Some of the notable personalities include Walter Sisulu; Robert Sobukwe.

From the ferry you get onto a bus with a tour guide who gives you a detailed and guided tour of the whole place.  The first stop is the area where Robert Sobukwe, a political activist and an outspoken opponent of apartheid, was put on solitary confinement with no interaction with any of the prisoners for nearly a decade.

From the solitary cell, you drive to the limestone quarry where the prisoners worked every day crushing rocks. There is a rock pile in the quarry, that was started by Nelson Mandela  when he returned to Robben Island in 1995. The 1,300 political prisoners with him at the reunion followed suit and created the cairn as a memorial for their strenuous labor.

An interesting thing about this tour is that there is a former prisoner who is now a guide at the island now which is no longer a prison. This gentleman gives his personal experience of life as a prisoner in Robben island. The exit from the place is the same one that the freed prisoners would use as they left the prison.

The island is accessible via ferry which operate at 9am, 11am and 1pm. The ship leaves for the island from the Cape Town Waterfront which you can access easily using a taxi. You need to arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to the scheduled times of departure, boarding gates close 10 minutes before departure time. You can opt for the seating at the top of the ferry or inside the cabin. Other places to visit

For the short time i was there i had the opportunity to visit the Table mountain; Robben island. Other interesting places visited were Somerset Mall and Canal Walk mall for some retail therapy; The Winjuis Wine bar and grill for some mouth-watering food and fine wine; Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate for a tour of the winelands and the experience of wine tasting.

Motivation Monday #5 Speak Life

mm5 quote_web

Power of the Spoken word

Words are the most powerful force that is available to mankind. Spoken words have started wars, broken marriages and strained relationships.  On the other hand spoken words have the power to heal, restore, encourage and support.

Many books of wisdom stress the fact that the tongue has the power of life and death.  A lot is at stake depending on what you speak.

Are you speaking life or death to your situation, circumstances, your family and even to the people around you?

There is power in the spoken word. Speak Life.

Complicated? Yes? No?

That is what i am

restless _Pixabay

There is this nagging feeling deep inside.

A feeling that there could be more.

A feeling that there is much more to life

A feeling of fear and anxiety.

Fear that i am living at a very limited percentage of my potential

Fear that i am beginning to get too comfortable in my comfort zone

Feeling that life might end before i fulfill my full potential in life

I feel that there is much more out there.

The voices in my head seem not to silence.

They are competing, each trying to be louder that the other

Sometimes the voices are drowned by fear

Or is fear also part of the voices? Fear of the unknown?

Most times, i do not know what i am afraid of

I have this strong feeling that there is more i could be doing

Feeling like i am not serving my God-given gift to the world as i should.

That i should focus my energy on things that fulfill my purpose

I want to be out in nature

I want to savour life

I want to appreciate beauty and art

I want to inspire people

I want to meet and interact with real people. So real that you can almost see and touch their hearts

So real you see the demons that torment them in their silence.

I get tired of pretense. Like you have to be something or someone so as to be accepted

Sometimes i feel caught up in a trap.

The rat race trap. Work for a living? Living to work? I don’t even know anymore.

Dare to live life at its fullest

Dare to be all that i can be

Dare to serve my gift and purpose to the benefit of the world

Complicated! Yes? No?

Perfection is overrated and other lessons learnt in life

Yesterday was my birthday. YAY!

And this is my first serious blog post.Double YAY!

All my life, i have loved birthdays and cake and everything to do with the day. Surprise birthdays are my favourite. Whether it is celebrating my birthday or someone else’s birthday. For me it is a time to reflect, be grateful and plan for the new year of your life. One of the things that i have always loved doing since i was a child was write. I wrote about anything and everything but somewhere along the way i stopped. Maybe it was the pressures of growing up and the changing seasons, i do not know, but yesterday evening as i wrapped up the day’s celebration, i decided that i was going to start writing as much as i can.

Life is interesting, it can be sad or happy, fulfilling or not fulfilling. Life is many things to different people but at the end of the day Life is actually a journey of learning. In the journey of life we learn from our own experiences, other people’s experiences, from books, from art, from writings, from the least expected of sources. Here are some of the lessons that i have learnt in my life’s journey.

Your attitude towards life determines life’s attitude towards you. If you think life is unfair and not worth living then do not be surprised when nothing seems to be working. If you have a positive attitude and treat life like a gift then things begin to look up. No amount of money or skills can heal a bad attitude. Change your attitude, Change your life.

Be kind to yourself. I have spend years being so hard on myself, convincing myself that i was not good enough, comparing myself with others whose journeys i did not understand. Love yourself and treat yourself well.Learn to forgive yourself for mistakes you have made before. Forgiveness is a gift you need to give to yourself.

Feel the fear but do it anyway. Courage is not the absence of fear, it is stepping out despite the fear. How many times does opportunity pass us by because we were too scared to try. Afraid of what people with think or say, afraid of the unknown. If i had a shilling for every time opportunity passed me by because i was too afraid then i would be a millionaire by now. You will be afraid so many times but do not let it hold you back.

Save, save , save. If possible save from your first paycheck. A little amount saved regularly becomes a big amount later. Learn about money, learn to manage your own finances. Invest. Spend less than you earn. Make money your servant and not your master.

Practice gratitude. Learn to say thank you to people. Count your blessings. The more we are grateful for the good things we have in life the more they seem to increase. Choosing to focus on the positive and the more you do that you will realize that there is always something to be grateful for. Keep a gratitude journal if you can, it comes in handy on those days you feel down.

You cannot please everyone. Seriously, you cannot. If you stop and stress out in life  at every opinion expressed then you may not accomplish much.

“You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks”. Winston Churchill

I have learnt that in every decision i make, i need to consider whose opinion matters and discard the rest. Some decisions are personal while others may need consulting and opinions of others who know better.Be wise enough to know the difference

Your body is your most valuable asset. You will be in it till the end of your life. Take care of your body. Diet, exercise and peace of mind are important. When we are younger you realize that you can eat all the junk and just be a lazy slob but as the years go by your body slows down and you unhealthy lifestyle begins to take a toll on you. Be active, watch your diet, drink water, deal with stress and prioritize caring for your body.

It is okay to be clueless. I know i have been clueless about so many things in life. No  person is the source of all the knowledge in life. Accepting that you don’t know is the first step to learning and finding information. Ask questions for it is better to look stupid for  a minute that to pretend you know while you do not.

Relationships are not easy. Friendships or marriages. They take sacrifice and lots of compromise.

textured old paper background with meadow vetchling

Perfection is overrated. Seriously it is!!! Perfect life! Perfect spouse! Perfect job! Perfect home etc. No they don’t exist. Who is perfect? Strive to give life your best but not perfection. Mistakes will happen that’s for sure but figure out what caused it , rectify and learn. Mistakes are part of life, learn from them.

Stop working hard. Work smart instead. I went to school with a lady who spend close to 20 hours studying everyday. She was either in class or the library with her books and a serious face to match. Unfortunately she didn’t perform so well after high school. Spending hours on a task does not always equal to productivity. Find out how to get tasks done well within a reasonable amount of time and with the available resources.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Really , Don’t

Slow down and smell the roses. Too often we live our lives in such a rush, moving from one task to another. Sometimes slowing down and taking stock of the progress we have made so far is better for our energy levels and sanity. Read more HERE.

Listen to your gut. Some of us call it the instinct. You know that small voice at the back of your mind . Like a hunch or a feeling about something or someone. Listen to it.

You are your associations. As much as you would want to admit that you are strong and cannot be swayed you unknowingly absorb the habits and attitudes of the people you spend the most time with. You want to be an eagle? Then soar with the eagles and quit scratching the surface with hens.

People come and go.  We meet several people along the journey of life. Some will stay, others will go. People change, relationships and friendships change. You realize that you no longer have anything in common with your best friend because you have both grown and evolved in different directions, there is nothing wrong with that. People come into your life for a reason, season or a lifetime. Accept that fact and quit trying to force an interaction.

You are unique. Science says that no two humans have similar fingerprints. Well, no two human beings are the same. Do not compare your life with someone else’s life for you may not have walked in their shoes. You may not know their story. Accept your self and believe in your uniqueness, believe that you have a gift to offer to the world. Celebrate yourself.

Don’t take yourself too seriously. Laugh at yourself, laugh at yourself for making stupid decisions. Do not be too uptight, it is not good for you or the people around you.

Don’t Take Yourself So Seriously.Yeah, yeah, you’re an individual, and people have to take you seriously, I get it. But at the end of the day, we’re all a bunch of ants trying to chase the same things. Lighten up.

( 25 Things About Life I Wish I Had Known 10 Years Ago by Darius Foroux)

Travel, Travel , Travel. Travel and explore within your neighborhood, within your country or another country. Visit and experience other cultures that are different from yours. No need to break the bank to travel, you can save, visit during the low season or travel within a budget. Traveling has a way of expanding your thinking and leaning to appreciate our differences as human beings.

Money is good but it is not everything. Money will afford you comfort and convenience. Do not get lost in making money that you miss all the pleasures of life. There is nothing as good as making money as you enjoy it.

Comfort zones stunt your growth. Yes they do. Take risks. Do something different, spend time with people who are different from you. Stretch yourself.

Keep learning, keep growing. We are never too old to learn something new. Stretch your mind.

No one is an expert on you except you. Always remember that.
